Schenker expands ops More space for logistics provider

KULIM: Schenker Logistics (M) Sdn Bhd expects its trucking and warehousing business in Malaysia to grow by about 10% this year.

Managing director Wolfgang Laabs said bonded trucking and warehousing business generated about RM210mil or one-third of the company’s RM650mil revenue in 2011.

Schenker Logistics also provides air-freight and ocean-freight cargo-handling services.

“This year, there should be a 10% growth for bonded trucking and warehousing due to higher demand for distribution services in the the country as a result of new investments coming into Malaysia,” he said.

Laabs said this after a groundbreaking ceremony for Schenker Logistics’ RM14.6mil warehouse to be built by Direct Express (M) Sdn Bhd at Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP).

“There would also be a slight growth for our ocean freight business from Malaysia due to intra-Asian trade in 2012, while the air-freight business is expected to be flat this year,” he added.

Laabs said Schenker Logistics had made a commitment to lease the new warehouse from Direct Express when the building was ready in September.

“When we lease from Direct Express in September, we will have four warehouses in KHTP.

“In the country, we presently have 2.2 million sq ft of warehouse space which are located in KHTP, the Klang Valley, Tanjung Pelepas, Malacca and Penang,” he said.

Of the 2.2 million sq ft space, Schenker owned about 250,000 sq ft, he added.

Direct Express managing director M. Karupaiya said the Kulim-based company would allocate RM5mil to purchase 20 trucks and prime movers this year.

“We currently have 62 trucks and prime movers in the country. We plan to construct another 85,000 sq ft warehouse in KHTP in the near future,” he added.
